Clarinets for Conservation 2021

You didn’t think a little thing like a global pandemic was going to stop us, did you? Nope, we’re clarinetists, so we always have a backup plan to go along with our backup reeds! The 7th Annual Clarinets for Conservation Benefit Recital will go on as planned, reimagined as a virtual event.

I plan to collect recordings from participants and post them as a playlist on my YouTube channel. As this was always intended to be a benefit concert, I will include a link to the Daraja Music Initiative web site, so that people can find out more about the project and make a donation if they so choose. http://www.darajamusicinitiative.org/

You can participate in several ways:
1. Send me a video of yourself playing a solo. You could do something for clarinet alone, or use live or pre-recorded accompaniment.
2. Perform in a small ensemble. This could be recorded live, or virtually on a platform such as Acapella.
3. Participate in the Virtual Massed Clarinet Choir. We will be playing two pieces: Panem Nostrum and Mungi ibariki Afrika (chorale portion only). Send me an audio recording and a selfie with your clarinet. I will edit the audio tracks together to create a virtual clarinet choir, and use the photos to make a slide show.

The due date for recordings is Sunday, February 28. Submit using this form: forms.gle/KJH4dMs6UVKaRpJv6

Recording Instructions
If you want to play along with the demo tracks as you make your recording, you’ll need two devices (such as a computer and your phone, for instance), and earphones or a headset. Listen to the demo recording through your earphones on one device, and play along while recording yourself on the other device. Do not record yourself with the demo playing in the background – that will cause problems when I try to layer up the various tracks. Be sure to tune before recording!

For Panem Nostrum, the play-along track is a simple drone. You can use it or not, but if you do use it, be sure to listen through a headset or earphones so that all I hear on your submitted recording is you. The tracks for this piece will be layered in a free-form way, so there is no need to align with anyone else. Play your chosen part at your own tempo.

For Mungi ibariki Afrika, all tracks need to be recorded at the same tempo. You could record while listening to the demo track on a headset or earphones. You could also record while listening to metronome, but again, you need to listen through earphones so that I don’t hear the clicks on your recording. Record the part you usually play in band. Basses, use Part 4. If you're not currently a member of an ensemble, choose whichever part you like. Listen to the recording on earphones and play along while recording yourself. You'll hear two bars of clicks for nothing. Begin at Letter H, take the repeat at Letter K back to Letter I, then cut to the last two measures of the piece. If you prefer to record with just a metronome, the tempo is quarter=112. These are all Bb parts.
